MESSAGE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC WHIP
I’m disappointed that this week, House Republicans continued to waste time by voting for the 46th time to undermine the Affordable Care Act, which is already providing important patient protections to millions of Americans. Democrats have always said that would work to improve health reform to ensure it works for everyone, and the President has taken positive steps to allow insurers to continue offering plans to current policy holders for another year. Unfortunately, instead of working with us improve the Affordable Care Act where needed and ensure it is implemented effectively, Republicans passed their bill that will create more problems and undermine important reforms that are slowing the growth of health care costs and providing real benefits to Americans.
There are only 12 remaining legislative days scheduled until the end of the year, yet Republican leadership is refusing to act on issues important to the American people. As conference committees continue to negotiate a compromise budget and a farm bill that includes adequate nutrition funding, Congress ought to also consider comprehensive immigration reform, the Senate-passed Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), and Make It In America legislation to create jobs and grow our economy. I’m disappointed that Speaker John Boehner has indicated he will not act on these items this year despite bipartisan support.
This week President Obama signed my bill, the School Access to Emergency Epinephrine Act, into law, marking an important step toward ensuring that students suffering from food allergies have access to life-saving epinephrine in school. This law, which I cosponsored with Rep. Dr. Phil Roe (R-TN), will save lives by encouraging schools to stock epinephrine injectors and permit trained school personnel to administer epinephrine to students believed to be having an anaphylactic reaction. This is especially important for students who many not be aware of a food allergy and are unprepared in the event of an allergic reaction. I’m proud that this bipartisan legislation became law, providing peace of mind to students, families, and educators, and I will continue to work with my colleagues across the aisle to find common-sense solutions that help Americans.
