Message from the Democratic Whip

This week, House Republicans brought two deeply flawed bills to the Floor. The first was their hypocritical rescissions package, which would rescind funding for priorities like children’s health in an attempt to look fiscally responsible. The bill is a sham and doesn’t begin to scratch the surface of our nation’s deficit after they added $1.8 trillion to the deficit as a result of their tax law. Republicans then brought to the Floor a funding bill that included several problematic provisions, such as cutting funding for renewable energy and energy efficiency programs; lifting a ban on guns on Army Corps of Engineers lands; and a number of partisan measures like repealing protections that keep our waterways clean. I joined House Democrats in opposing these bills and continue to call on my Republican colleagues to work with Democrats to responsibly fund our nation’s priorities in a fiscally responsible manner.

In addition, the Trump Administration took dramatic steps this week to sabotage and gut the Affordable Care Act by refusing to defend the law in court. If the court rules in favor of the Administration, it would gut the ACA and kick 130 million Americans with pre-existing conditions off coverage. Insurers are already raising rates and pointing to Republicans’ sabotage of the health care law as the reason for the increase in the cost of health care coverage. While Republicans continue to offer Americans a raw deal on health care, Democrats are focused on a Better Deal that ensures access to affordable, quality health care and protects both Medicare and Social Security.

I continue to urge Speaker Ryan to bring legislation to the Floor to address the DACA crisis created by President Trump. After months of promising to put forward a measure to protect DREAMers, he has failed to do so. That’s why I believe we must move forward with an effort that, if signed by 218 Members, would force consideration of four measures: the DREAM Act, the USA Act, Rep. Goodlatte’s bill, and any alternative that the Speaker wants to offer. We will continue to work to force a vote and provide certainty to DREAMers that they can remain here with a pathway to citizenship.

Finally, I offer my congratulations to the Washington Capitals, 2018 Stanley Cup Champions! It’s a very proud day in the Capital Region.

Sincerely yours,

Steny H. Hoyer
