Message from the Democratic Whip

This week, Americans continued to see the impact of Republicans’ efforts to sabotage the Affordable Care Act. This week, a report from Gallup indicated that the uninsured rate is rising and health insurers in Maryland and Virginia proposed significant premium increases in the ACA Marketplaces for 2019. These changes consumers are seeing are a direct result of the Trump Administration and Congressional Republicans’ actions to undermine the law, which you can learn more about here. With control of both chambers of Congress and the White House, Republicans have a responsibility to strengthen the law instead of destabilizing the marketplace, kicking Americans off coverage, and increasing costs for consumers. I will continue to advocate for legislation to strengthen the Affordable Care Act and allow more Americans to access affordable, quality health care.

Next week, House Republicans are planning to bring their partisan Farm Bill to the Floor. The legislation restricts vital nutrition assistance programs that keep 40 million Americans from going hungry, fails to support economic opportunity for rural America, and weakens environmental protections.  Instead of working with Democrats to write a bipartisan bill that supports farmers and addresses food insecurity, Republicans chose a partisan path and Republicans are facing opposition to the bill from all sides, including conservative organizations and their own Members. Republicans ought to abandon this partisan exercise and work with Democrats on bipartisan legislation that provides certainty and confidence to America’s agriculture community. I will oppose this bill when it comes to the Floor.

Finally, House Republicans introduced legislation this week that cuts $15 billion in funding, including half from the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and the Affordable Care Act. This proposal is the height of hypocrisy as House Republicans voted to explode the deficit by $1.8 trillion to give tax cuts to the wealthiest in America and corporations just five months ago. I oppose this political gimmick as Republicans attempt to call themselves agents of fiscal responsibility. They ought to work with Democrats to find bipartisan solutions to make our make our nation’s current and future fiscal situation more sustainable.

Sincerely yours,

Steny H. Hoyer
