This week, House Republicans passed their “Pay China First” bill that places our nation at risk of defaulting on our obligations. This partisan bill mandates paying China and other holders of our debt before our other legal obligations, including paying our troops, veterans benefits, and seniors’ health care. Taking this action of prioritizing is what a bankrupt company would do, and sends a message to the world that the United States is not worthy of its credit rating. This is not an acceptable action. We are the most creditworthy nation on earth. We should pay all of our bills, on time. Economists and even some Republicans have argued that debt prioritization is not a serious or feasible solution to our debt.

Also this week, House Republicans continued to refuse to complete work on a budget that would replace the irrational sequester. Instead, they wasted time on another political messaging bill, their “Pay Working Families Less” bill that ends the 40-hour workweek as we know it. This partisan bill removes important protections for American workers. As working families continue to recover from the recession, Congress should focus on creating jobs and restoring fiscal discipline – not a partisan roll back of workers' rights.

Next week, Republicans have scheduled the 37th vote to repeal the Affordable Care Act, instead of focusing on jobs or voting to replace the damaging sequester cuts. This political messaging bill is another waste of time that would take away health care protections from millions of Americans. I will continue to strongly urge my Republican colleagues to return to regular order and continue our budget process so that we can stop the sequester and put our nation back on a fiscally sustainable path.

Sincerely yours,
