Over the weekend, Speaker John Boehner appeared on NBC’s “Meet the Press” where he made a astounding claim:
“We've known about [the sequester] for 16 months. And yet even today, there's no plan from Senate Democrats or the White House to replace the sequester. And over the last 10 months, House Republicans have acted twice to replace the sequester.”
Wait… what? Is it possible he has somehow forgotten about the President’s balanced proposal AND Senate Democrats’ bipartisan proposal?
Politifact recognized the absurdity in this statement and decided to set the record straight:
“He’s wrong on both counts. Obama has a proposal for replacing sequestration cuts with a mix of tax increases and spending cuts. And Senate Democrats have filed a sequester-replacement bill taking a similar approach.”
In case he also forgets – House Democrats have also proposed a balanced solution to avert the sequester, which Republicans have rejected bringing to the House Floor not once, but three times.
Now that we’ve cleared that up, perhaps the Speaker will bring Democrats’ balanced proposal to the House Floor for a vote so we can stop the reckless and irresponsible cuts known as the sequester?
