WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, which began September 15 and goes through October 15:
“During Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate the numerous contributions Hispanic-Americans have made to our nation. As the fastest growing minority group in our nation, Hispanics are an integral part of our culture and our economy, and have made our country a better place.
“The contributions of Hispanics to American culture are important, and range from film and television to food and music. The economic impact of Hispanic-Americans is equally significant, with Hispanics opening businesses at a rate three times above the national average.
“Democrats are working hard to make real changes to improve the lives of all Americans, including Hispanic-Americans. We raised the minimum wage so that the American Dream is within reach for everyone, and we are making America safer by implementing the recommendations of the 9/11 Commission. We are making college more affordable by cutting the interest rate on student loans and increasing the size of Pell Grants, and we are strengthening Head Start to help every child succeed in school. We continue to work on reforming our immigration system so that immigrants from all nations will find the process both fair and orderly.
“The members of the Hispanic-American community should be proud of their many accomplishments that have enriched our nation. I applaud their contributions, and will continue to fight for legislation that will have a real, positive impact on their lives.”
