WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, which begins today, September 15, and goes through October 15:
“From September 15th to October 15th, the United States marks Hispanic Heritage Month. This month celebrates the contributions of America’s largest and fastest-growing minority community. Indeed, there is a good deal to celebrate this year, with the recent confirmation of our first Latina Supreme Court Justice, Sonia Sotomayor. And as President Obama said today in a White House proclamation, ‘Hispanics have played a vital role in the moments and movements that have shaped our country. They have enriched our culture and brought creativity and innovation to everything from sports to the sciences and from the arts to our economy.’

“Of course, this month also brings with it a reminder of the challenges faced by America’s Hispanic community. As Congress debates health care reform, for instance, we are reminded that Hispanics lack health insurance at a rate more than twice that of the general population. That is just one of the reasons why we are working hard to pass reform legislation that brings coverage, security, and peace of mind to all Americans.”
