Majority Leader Hoyer Commemorates
Jewish American Heritage Month

WASHINGTON, DC - House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in recognition of Jewish American Heritage Month, which began on May 1:

"This May, we recognize the second annual Jewish American Heritage Month, an opportunity to celebrate the long, rich history of Jewish Americans and their vital contributions to our nation's culture, economy, and society.

"After first arriving in this nation in 1654 in search of a place to practice their faith freely, Jewish Americans have gone on to shape both our country and its history.  Despite facing intolerance and prejudice, the Jewish community has thrived.  Their hard work has enriched every segment of society, from business and education, to law, medicine, public service, and countless other fields.  The Jewish community has served as an example to all Americans through its unwavering commitment to the deeply-held values of freedom, liberty, and basic human rights.

"As a nation of immigrants, the United States would not be what it is today without the contributions and culture of Jewish Americans.  Throughout the month of May, we honor the role American Jews have played in our society."
