WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer released the following statement this afternoon after an amendment to fund the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan failed, with more than 100 House Republicans refusing to take a stand on the issue and voting “present:”
“I understand the differences of opinion on the war in Iraq. There is little question, in Congress and among the American people, that the prosecution of this war by the Bush Administration has been incompetent and egregious errors have been made. Yet, all of us, on both sides of the aisle, strongly support our men and women who are in harm’s way.
“On this war funding vote, Democratic members – to a person – had the courage of their convictions and cast either a yes or no vote. The same cannot be said for the 132 Republicans – or two-thirds of Republican Members – who refused to cast a yes or no vote on this very clear issue and instead voted ‘present.’ They failed to take a stand. And, I can only speculate as to how they intend to explain that to their constituents back home.”
