LEGISLATIVE DIRECTOR

OFFICE OF CONGRESSMAN SETH MOULTON


SUMMARY:
The Legislative Director, together with the legislative staff, advises the Congressman on all legislative issues, assisting in the development of strategic policy goals and legislative initiatives and managing the office's legislative staff. In particular, the office is looking for a principled, mission-driven, and energetic candidate with a policy background and interest in promoting economic opportunity.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Supervisory: Oversees up to four legislative employees.
○ Responsible for long-term and short-term legislative planning for the Member and for ensuring that legislative staff is properly focused on carrying out the Member's legislative goals
○ Participates in the hiring of legislative staff to build a strong team, together with the Chief of Staff and the Congressman, when necessary
○ Assigns legislative staff areas of responsibility and assists the Chief of Staff in evaluating the legislative staff work
○ Trains and supervises legislative staff to ensure they always support the mission and values of the Congressman’s team, and ensures legislative staff complies with office policies, practices, and procedures
○ Schedules and directs legislative staff meetings, encouraging dissent and debate
○ Maintains up-to-date status reports on all legislation affecting the district, legislation in which the Congressman is a principal sponsor, or legislation on which the Congressman is a cosponsor, and supervises drafting of vote explanations for all major votes
○ Coordinates responses to all legislative mail and maintains good relationships with constituents
○ Provides the Member with support in building and maintaining positive relationships with other Members, House Leadership, and the Democratic Caucus

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
A bachelor’s degree or higher education level is preferred. Experience on Capitol Hill, and/or other legislative experience is beneficial. Additionally, private sector experience is appreciated.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
○ Ability to find creative solutions to problems, build and motivate a strong team, and build effective partnerships
○ Temperament to communicate with a variety of personalities in a tactful, pleasant, and professional manner
○ Provides necessary organization, supervision, leadership, and motivation to manage the legislative staff
