Leader's Report
majorityleader.house.gov · (202) 225-3130

This week, the House passed the American Housing Rescue and Foreclosure Prevention Act, a major bill that directly addresses the mortgage crisis.  In addition to keeping families who are facing foreclosure in their homes, this bill also indirectly helps millions more families by stabilizing home values that have seen a precipitous drop over the past year.  And because the recent economic downturn in large part stemmed from the mortgage crisis, we cannot begin to strengthen our economy until it is addressed.  I am pleased that this bill passed yesterday with bipartisan support.

Next week, the House will take up a Farm Bill that makes record investments in nutrition programs, begins making reforms to farm payments, commits to land conservation efforts, and promotes the development of ethanol and biofuels from non-corn sources.  We will also bring an Iraq supplemental bill to the Floor next week that includes an expanded GI Bill that improves education benefits for veterans, as well as a short extension of unemployment benefits for workers who have trouble finding a job in today's weak economy.
Sincerely yours,
Steny H. Hoyer
