MESSAGE FROM THE MAJORITY LEADER
This week, House Democrats passed a fiscally responsible budget for Fiscal Year 2008 (which begins October 1) that will take our nation in a new direction and begin to clean up the fiscal train wreck left by the Republican Party. In just six years, President Bush and Republicans in Congress turned a projected $5.6 trillion budget surplus into additional debt of more than $3 trillion. The budget offered by House Democrats will restore fiscal responsibility, bringing our budget back to balance by 2012. The Democratic budget reflects our values and priorities, demonstrating our unwavering commitment to defend our nation, grow our economy, protect our children and strengthen families, preserve our planet, and ensure that our government is accountable and efficient. For example, the Democratic budget ensures a robust defense, boosting homeland security funding and providing $3.5 billion more for veterans’ services than the President’s budget proposal for 2008.
