For Immediate Release:
December 10, 2010

This week the House passed the DREAM Act, which gives young people brought to the United States as minors a chance to earn their legal status so that they can serve and contribute to our nation. The legislation requires those individuals to graduate from high school or get a GED and complete two years of college or military service to be eligible for citizenship. Giving these young people a chance to succeed is the right thing to do morally and will strengthen our country’s well-being.

To further ensure the safety of our nation's food supply and address food safety scares that have a dramatic impact on our way of life, the House passed legislation that expands the Food and Drug Administration’s authority and resources needed to address threats to our food supply. This bill will help ensure that all American families can have confidence that their food is free of contamination.

The House also passed a year-long extension of the current Medicare physician payment rates so that seniors can continue to visit their physician of choice and physicians will have the stability they need. The bill will now go to the President’s desk for his signature.

House Democrats are continuing to discuss how to address the expiration of tax cuts on January 1. Any final product should create jobs and not make our deficit problem worse. We will keep working next week to ensure that taxes on middle class families do not increase and that we are not putting more debt on working families with tax cuts for the wealthy that do not help the economy.

Sincerely yours,
Steny H. Hoyer
