WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the World Trade Organization's appellate body affirmed the ruling in March that China has violated international trade rules:

“Today’s decision by the World Trade Organization, which reaffirms the ruling in March that China has been pursuing illegal measures to disrupt the global trade in rare earth minerals, is a major victory for American workers and advanced manufacturing businesses.  These minerals are critical to the production of advanced technology components that our businesses sell at home and export around the world.  They are instrumental in the manufacture of electronics and in the production of more energy efficient products, and securing access to them has been an important aim under the Make It In America plan to boost our manufacturing sector and support job creation.

“I applaud the Obama Administration and U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman for their tireless efforts to see this case through to its successful conclusion.  President Obama’s commitment to enforcing trade rules continues to benefit our workers, businesses, and consumers, and when the playing field is fair, our manufacturers are able to compete across the globe and create jobs here so more of our people can Make It In America.”
