WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the need to bring the DREAM Act to the Floor and protect DREAMers across the nation, including DREAMers currently serving in the military:

“This morning, a number of House Republicans held a press conference to announce that Congress should act before the end of the year to pass a permanent solution to allow DREAMers to remain here.  Words, however, are not enough; press conferences do not bring bills to the Floor.  If these Members wish to solve the problem created by President Trump’s irresponsible ending of the DACA program, they can do so by cosponsoring the bipartisan, bicameral DREAM Act and signing the bipartisan discharge petition to bring it to the Floor for a vote.  As these Republicans pointed out today, bipartisan legislation would pass with overwhelming support if the House were able to work its will.

“The approximately 800,000 DREAMers and their families – including the 900 DACA recipients serving in mission-critical positions in our Armed Forces – deserve to live with the peace of mind that they can stay in the country they have called home since childhood.  Let’s not wait until the end of the year: let’s come together right now to take action and pass the DREAM Act.”
