WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in recognition of World AIDS Day, which is tomorrow, December 1:

“Tomorrow, on World AIDS Day, we renew our commitment to fighting this terrible disease and helping to improve the lives of those millions affected by HIV-AIDS worldwide.  Together, the United States and other nations have made great advances in treating HIV-AIDS and raising awareness about how to prevent infection.  Our commitment to research and the discovery of advances has not waned, and we must not rest until HIV-AIDS no longer threatens communities here in America and around the world.

“Through continued investment in medical research, an expansion of access to life-saving treatments, and an improvement in prevention education, America’s mission to eradicate HIV-AIDS continues.  Already, through our funding for programs like PEPFAR, the Global Fund, and ADAP, our country plays a central role in stemming the spread of HIV-AIDS across the globe.  But we must strive for further successes and new avenues for bringing hope to the millions living with the disease and at risk of contracting it.  United in our determination to find a cure, let us rededicate ourselves to the great task of ending the scourge of HIV-AIDS once and for all.”
