WASHINGTON, DC – Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in recognition of World AIDS Day:

“On World AIDS Day, we remember those who we have lost and recommit ourselves to the unfinished work of treating and saving the lives of the millions living with the disease. It is also a day to draw strength from the great strides we have made as a nation and in concert with our international partners in the fight against global HIV-AIDS. During these times of challenge and uncertainty, we must not lose sight of our ongoing commitment to expand access to treatment and prevention and to fund research for a cure. The money we spend each year on programs like PEPFAR, ADAP, and the Global Fund has saved countless lives and reaffirmed America as a beacon for hope in Africa and around the world.

“This year, let us set our goals higher. I applaud President Obama’s announcement that the administration will be committing additional resources to combat the global epidemic and to enable more Americans living with HIV-AIDS to obtain life-saving treatment. I also join in celebrating the tireless efforts of those working each day on prevention, treatment, research, and access to care. Through the lens of the global HIV-AIDS crisis we has witnessed some of the most difficult facets of the human experience, yet we have also demonstrated what committed nations, organizations, faith groups, and individuals can do when they work together to save and improve lives.”
