WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the Workforce Investment Act of 2012:

“Today, Education and the Workforce Committee Ranking Member George Miller, Rep. Ruben Hinojosa, and Rep. John Tierney introduced the Workforce Investment Act of 2012.  This bill is central to House Democrats’ Make It In America plan for creating jobs and strengthening our economic competitiveness both right away and over the long-term.  It incorporates a number of Make It In America proposals, including training in advanced manufacturing skills and the retraining of workers so they can keep up with emerging technologies and help their companies remain competitive, building partnerships between businesses and educational institutions to give students the tools employers need, and expanding programs that help those who lose their jobs transition into new ones.

“With millions still looking for jobs, and many ready-to-hire businesses finding it difficult to locate workers with the skills they need, this reauthorization of the bipartisan 1998 Workforce Investment Act is more important than ever.  Our economy is recovering, and we’ve experienced two years of consecutive monthly growth in private sector jobs, but Congress ought to be doing more to help get more Americans back to work.  I strongly urge Republicans to work with us to pass this bill quickly into law.”
