WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement after the wildfire near Yarnell, Arizona took the lives of 19 firefighters:

“As Co-Chair of the Congressional Fire Services Caucus, I was deeply saddened to learn of the loss of nineteen courageous firefighters who rushed into harm’s way to protect their community from a devastating wildfire near Yarnell, Arizona. These heroes, members of an elite fire crew, were among our nation’s finest, and they will be remembered by a grateful nation for giving their lives in service to the safety of others. I join in offering my deepest condolences to their families, friends, and loved ones.

“As brave fire crews continue to battle this wildfire, they have their nation’s support and prayers. I will continue working with my colleagues in Congress to ensure that state and local officials always have the resources they need to fight fires safely and effectively, to recover from disasters, and rebuild communities.”
