WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after House and Senate leaders of both parties met with President Barack Obama to discuss the economic recovery package:
“The meeting at the White House today was productive. Democrats are committed to working in a bipartisan manner, as we’ve shown by accepting amendments during markups on the economic recovery package held by the Appropriations, Ways and Means, and Energy and Commerce Committees this week. As the process moves forward we will continue to discuss with House Republicans ways for them to put forward their ideas.
“At today’s meeting, I also raised the need to focus on our long-term fiscal situation once the economy has stabilized. Deficit reduction and entitlement reform must be national priorities, and both will require genuine bipartisanship to achieve. I look forward to working with the Obama Administration on the upcoming fiscal responsibility summit, which was discussed at today’s meeting, as a starting point for restoring our nation’s fiscal health.”
