WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the violence following protests by white supremacists in Charlottesville, Virginia:

"I am deeply concerned by the violence in Charlottesville, and my thoughts and prayers are with the family of the individual who was killed and the many who have been injured. The displays of hate, racism, and bigotry that began last night are unacceptable, and all Americans ought to condemn them. President Trump needs to specifically condemn the racist nature of the white nationalist violence instead of claiming there is violence 'on many sides.' There are not two sides to this situation. We must condemn racism and unite as a nation around our common principles of tolerance, respect, and equality for all."
