WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in recognition of Veterans Day, which is observed on Sunday, November 11:

“This Sunday, Americans across our country will gather to celebrate the service of veterans and the sacrifices of military families.  This year, we honor the memory of veterans from the First World War, which ended a century ago, whose return home with the physical and mental wounds of war prompted the very first national observance of Veterans’ Day in 1919.  As we remember those heroes, let us give thanks to all who have worn our nation’s uniform, including those who recently returned home from service in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other places where American forces have served with distinction.

“We must stand with our veterans and their families, not just in words but in taking action to improve veterans’ access to quality health care, combat the alarming rate of veteran suicide, ensure that those returning from service can find good jobs that ease the transition back into civilian life, and make certain no veteran is homeless and living on the streets.  Next year, the new Democratic Majority in the House will have a responsibility to continue to ensure our veterans and their families receive the care and resources they’ve earned through their service, and that is a sacred charge we will keep.

“I’m proud to serve in Congress alongside so many dedicated veterans, and I look forward to welcoming the many newly elected Members next Congress who have served in the Armed Forces.  They will be powerful advocates for our nation’s veterans and military families, joining Members on both sides of the aisle who have worked for many years to ensure that support for veterans is bipartisan and robust.”
