WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Trump Administration announced sanctions against Saudi Arabia in response to the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi:

“The sanctions announced today are a welcome step in addressing the heinous murder of Jamal Khashoggi, which the Trump Administration initially tried to brush off.  While we continue to value our strategic partnership with Saudi Arabia, serious changes must be made in order to move forward from this incident. These include: a truthful and accurate accounting of what happened to Mr. Khashoggi, particularly given Saudi deception to date; a verifiable commitment by Saudi Arabia, along with its coalition partners, to end the disastrous war in Yemen expeditiously; an immediate clemency review for journalists, bloggers, and civil society activists the Kingdom has detained; a contribution to regional peace efforts; and a change in Saudi behavior with regard to peaceful dissent by its citizens.

“None of these efforts should be interpreted by Iran as a lessening of our resolve to thwart their malfeasant behavior in the region.  The United States remains - in a bipartisan fashion - committed to pushing back on Iran’s destabilizing activities in the region, and we will continue to work with our allies to prevent Iran from sowing instability.”
