WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on President Trump’s remarks about shutting down the government:

“President Trump seems to forget that, with Republican majorities in the House and Senate, he and his colleagues control all the levers of our government.  Democrats do not believe that ‘our country needs a good shutdown,’ as the President suggested earlier this year, and we continue to be ready to work with Republicans to prevent that from happening.

“Republicans have had more than two months to forge consensus on a path forward under the current funding resolution, and have instead wasted all that time pushing tax cuts for the very wealthy.  This would be the first time in our nation’s history that a party holding the House, Senate, and White House chose to shut down a government completely under its own control.  If the President and Republicans can’t agree among themselves on how to keep the government open, Democrats welcome the opportunity to work with Republicans on a compromise agreement to address the many outstanding issues confronting our nation.”
