WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the Supreme Court’s decision in Harris v. Quinn:

“The Supreme Court’s ruling today in Harris v. Quinn is a setback for workers and their families.  For over a century, collective bargaining has been an essential tool for ensuring that workers receive the pay and benefits they deserve – and for demanding fair wages that can sustain families in a growing middle class.  Today’s ruling threatens to erode collective bargaining by enabling any number of individuals to withhold financial support from the labor organizations that represent them at the bargaining table – even as they reap the benefits of collective bargaining.  House Democrats remain committed to defending the ability of unions to bargain effectively in order to help a new generation of American workers reach the middle class.”
