WASHINGTON, DC - House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on Senate passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act:
“I commend Majority Leader Reid and all the Senators who worked so hard to ensure approval of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act this morning. As passage of the House bill did last month, today’s action breaks new ground in the fight for quality, affordable health care that all Americans can count on.
“We look forward to working with the Senate and President Obama to merge the two bills into one consensus product that ensures our goals of quality, security, and affordability in our nation’s health care system, while working to control costs and reduce the deficit. Central to that will be the assurance of middle-class affordability, the containment of costs in the near and long term, and a strong package of insurance reforms that strengthens protections and the decision-making power of patients and their doctors.
“American families, small businesses and taxpayers will benefit significantly from the reforms we will pass, including an end to coverage denials or restrictions for individuals with pre-existing conditions, annual caps on out-of-pocket expenses, an expansion of coverage for young adults under their parents’ plan, and a new health insurance marketplace providing choice and competition for small businesses and uninsured Americans. Whether you currently have health insurance or not, reform will give you the peace of mind of affordable, quality health care at every stage in life.
“Our nation knows all too well what the price of failing to pass comprehensive reform has been, and would continue to be – a rising sense of insecurity for Americans who have health insurance and a growing crisis for those who don’t. We have before us the most promising opportunity to address this national challenge since President Teddy Roosevelt called for health reform nearly a century ago. Today’s action makes it that much more clear that the time is now.”
