WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after Secretary Janet Napolitano announced she will be stepping down as the Secretary of Homeland Security to become the next President of the University of California system:

"I join in congratulating Sec. Napolitano on her selection as the next President of the University of California system and thanking her for her service at the helm of the Department of Homeland Security over the past four years.  As Secretary, she has worked tirelessly to keep Americans safe, both through implementing smart national security policies as well as taking important steps in the area of cybersecurity to protect American businesses and government agencies.  Under her watch, FEMA and other DHS agencies executed a robust response to Superstorm Sandy and other disasters, and our borders are now more secure than ever before. Both as DHS Secretary and as Governor of Arizona, Sec. Napolitano has been a strong advocate for the growth of opportunities for middle-class families - especially through education - that help secure America as a global leader, including comprehensive immigration reform. I wish her all the best as she prepares to transition into her new role."
