WASHINGTON, DC - House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the House passed the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Treatment Extension Act by a vote of 408 to 9:
“Today, by a strong bipartisan majority, the House voted to reauthorize the Ryan White CARE Act, which strengthens our nation’s commitment to Americans with HIV/AIDS. More than 20 years ago, Ryan White’s courage in the face of illness helped break a national silence over HIV/AIDS; today, we mark his legacy by reauthorizing, for the fourth time, the treatment programs named in his honor. The bill passed today increases funding to combat HIV/AIDS by expanding access to vital support services; ensuring that HIV/AIDS services are distributed equitably through our states, cities, and rural communities; and helping more individuals learn their disease status and access early treatment. Now that this legislation has passed both chambers of Congress, I look forward to President Obama’s signature on this important and humane bill.”
