WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement after a Pennsylvania judge delayed implementation of the state's voter ID law:

“Today's ruling in Pennsylvania affirms what Democrats have contended all along: that new, Republican-sponsored voter identification laws are an attempt to suppress the votes of eligible Americans. In a democracy, that’s not what we ought to do. We ought to encourage and facilitate every vote.

“Those without the new forms of identification required by Republican-sponsored voting laws come disproportionately from the ranks of our seniors, young people, and minority groups. The law that was blocked today in Pennsylvania, along with similar legislation across the country, would silence voices we need to hear not just this year but every year.

“To ensure their participation, Democrats are pursuing solutions, like the Voter Empowerment Act I am cosponsoring, that protect early voting, voter registration, and fair ballot access. We will continue drawing attention to these discriminatory laws and working to overturn or repeal them.”
