WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after Congressman Heath Shuler (NC-11) announced that he is retiring at the end of this Congress:
"Over the past five years, I have come to know Heath Shuler as a resolute lawmaker, a determined advocate for getting America's fiscal house in order, and – above all – a good friend. I will greatly miss him in this House, where he has made an enormous impact as a leader of the Blue Dog Coalition and as a rising star in the Democratic caucus. Heath entered politics for the right reasons – to serve the people of his community day-in and day-out and fight for their interests and well-being. I am proud to have served with him, and I am glad to call him my good friend.
"Heath Shuler has been one of the key leaders in Congress working to tackle the fiscal challenge that confronts our nation. I look forward to continuing to work closely with him on that effort over the next ten months before he leaves Congress and for as long as it takes to achieve it. I know that Heath will be a great success in whatever he does in the future. I wish him, his wonderful wife Nikol, and their children the very best in the future "
