WASHINGTON, DC - Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer released the following statement today after Republicans blocked an extension of unemployment insurance benefits:

"Today, Republicans blocked an extension of unemployment insurance for thousands of families who have lost jobs through no fault of their own. As a result, they can expect their insurance to begin to run out just after Thanksgiving weekend. Republicans’ opposition to this bill was bad for families across their own districts, and worse for our economy as a whole.

"Millions of Americans remain out of work, not because they don’t want to work, but because an economic crisis they didn’t cause cut their jobs out from beneath them. There is still a great deal of work to be done to create more jobs and get our economy back to health—but that doesn’t mean we should ignore those who are struggling right now. This vote was a stark test of our priorities, and House Republicans showed that their priorities are decidedly in the wrong place for middle-class families.

"Because Democrats are committed to supporting struggling families and rebuilding our economy, we will keep working to address the extension of unemployment insurance when Congress returns to session on the week of November 29th."
