WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after voting against H.R. 2775, the No Subsidies Without Verification Act, House Republicans' 41st vote to repeal or defund the Affordable Care Act:
“With only six legislative days remaining before the end of the fiscal year, I am extremely disappointed that House Republicans continue to waste the Congress’s time on pointless attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act by undermining its implementation. Instead, we ought to be working on passing a responsible continuing resolution in order to avert a government shutdown on October 1st.
“This morning’s bill brought the 41st vote to repeal or defund the health reform law we passed in 2010 – reform that is already bringing costs down and ending discriminatory practices. The bill on the Floor today was designed to stop any and all eligible Americans from receiving tax credits and subsidies to use when purchasing insurance next year. A system to verify the income of applicants for these credits and subsidies is already in place along with a system to verify that, at the end of each year, no American received more or less than the law allows. Instead, the bill Republicans sent to the Floor this morning creates a large, expensive bureaucracy to do something that is already being done.
“Instead of doing anything and everything to overturn the Affordable Care Act, Republicans ought to work with Democrats in a bipartisan way to make sure the law is implemented fairly and efficiently so that it works for everyone. Democrats will continue to defend the Affordable Care Act and the important cost-savings it provides to individuals, families, and small businesses.”
