WASHINGTON, DC – Today House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) issued the following statement on the Republican Patient’s Rights Repeal Bill, which does not include or allow for debate of any Democratic amendments:
“Republicans had a clear opportunity to live up to their promises of a fair and open process in the 112th Congress with the consideration of their Patient’s Rights Repeal Bill. By all accounts they broke that promise, refusing to allow any Democratic amendments and bringing it straight to the Floor without committee consideration. With virtually no discussion of the consequences, Republicans are bringing to a vote a bill that takes away the new freedoms that Americans have in their health care and takes us back to the days where insurance companies can deny care if you have a pre-existing condition, cancel coverage when you get sick and arbitrarily limit the amount of care you receive.
“Not only does this bill allow for a return of the worst insurance company abuses, it explodes the federal deficit. Just yesterday, the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office released an analysis that found that repealing the health reform law would increase the deficit by $230 billion over the next ten years and more than $1.2 trillion over the decade after that, breaking a separate promise to reduce the deficit.
“The American people simply cannot afford the Republican Patient’s Rights Repeal Bill and they don’t deserve the Republicans’ broken promises.”
