WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) released the following statement tonight on news reports of anti-Semitism in Eastern Ukraine:

"I am appalled by news reports that militants aligned with President Putin in Eastern Ukraine have been disseminating materials demanding that Jews register themselves and their property with pro-Russian militias. This type of singling out of Jews for intimidation recalls the early days of Nazism and the suppression of Jews' basic rights under Soviet rule. As a former Chairman of the Helsinki Commission and someone who was deeply involved with efforts to free Soviet Jewry before the end of the Cold War, I find these reports deeply disturbing. As Jews in America and around the world celebrate Passover, a celebration of freedom from oppression and persecution over the course of millenia, those who would target Jews in Ukraine today should quickly realize they are on the wrong side of history."
