WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today regarding Rep. Lane Evans’ (D-IL) retirement after serving eleven terms in the United States Congress:

“Throughout our history, America’s veterans have shown a selfless willingness to put their lives on the line to protect and defend the United States, and to sacrifice for their fellow citizens. Today’s generation of veterans has been fortunate to have one of their own, Rep. Lane Evans, as the Ranking Democrat on the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee. Lane has been a courageous and tireless voice in ensuring that America’s heroes receive the quality health care and benefits that they have so valiantly earned.

“Lane’s leadership in the Democratic Caucus will be missed, and we all wish him well as he faces a difficult struggle with Parkinson’s disease.  The 17th District of Illinois should be proud of the fine legacy of strength and service that Evans leaves behind in the United States Congress, and the Marines should be proud of the honorable commitment to public service he has displayed throughout his life.”
