WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after Representative Gene Green (TX-29) announced he would retire at the end of the 115th Congress:

“I was saddened to learn of my friend Rep. Gene Green’s decision to retire at the end of this Congress.  He will be missed on both sides of the aisle in the House, which he has served with honor and distinction for the past twenty-four years.  Gene has been a champion for Texans and for Houstonians in Congress and, before that, in the Texas legislature.
“As Ranking Member of the Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health, Gene has played an important role in defending the Affordable Care Act, fighting every day for expanded access to affordable insurance coverage for all who need it.  He has also been a staunch ally of Israel in Congress, helping to ensure the strong, bipartisan support essential for the security of the Middle East’s only representative democracy.  We have worked together closely on these and many other issues over the years, and I know Gene will continue to work hard for the people of Texas’s Twenty-Ninth Congressional District throughout the remainder of his term.
“I wish Gene and his wife Helen all the best as he prepares to return home at the end of the Congress to enjoy more time with their children and grandchildren, and I thank him for his service to our country.”
