WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today commemorating Cinco de Mayo, which is celebrated today:
“Every year on May 5th, we mark the anniversary of one of the most inspiring victories in Mexican history: the Battle of Puebla, when the Mexican Army defeated France’s much larger and better-equipped forces attempting to impose colonial domination on Mexico.  Cinco de Mayo has come to symbolize resistance against aggression and the triumph of patriots against overwhelming odds.
“In America, Cinco de Mayo is a day to celebrate the richness of Mexican-American culture and recognize the contributions of millions of our citizens.  Whether in business, the military, the arts, or public service, the hard work of Mexican-Americans throughout our country is vital to our Nation’s prosperity. I join today with all Americans in celebrating Cinco de Mayo and the important contributions of Mexican-Americans to our Nation.”
