WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in recognition of the holy month of Ramadan, which begins tonight at sundown:

“I join in wishing Muslim-Americans across our country a very meaningful Ramadan observance.  To all participating in the holiday, I say: Ramadan Mubarak.  During this month of prayer and reflection, families and communities find strength in coming together.  I hope that this Ramadan will bring a spirit of gathering that will bring both Muslims and non-Muslims in our country together to learn from each other, to share in the values we hold in common, and to engage in the work of our common enterprise.  Only by working together can we strengthen our democracy and expand opportunities for all Americans.

“Throughout its history, the United States has been enriched by the involvement of its Muslim communities in building a greater America.  In government, business, the arts and sciences, education, and our national defense, Muslim-Americans have contributed so much to this nation.  That is why this President’s insinuations that people from Muslim countries shouldn’t be welcomed here is so contradictory not only to our principles as a nation but also to common sense.  I hope that this Ramadan brings hope and peace to those observing it – and I hope it will also provide all of us with an opportunity to reach out and build connections that weave the American quilt more tightly so that we may all be sheltered in the warmth of its camaraderie and common purpose.”
