WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after President Obama delivered remarks at his press conference on national security programs:

"I welcome the President’s announcement this afternoon of new steps to strengthen the oversight, transparency, and due process safeguards of our intelligence surveillance programs.  While keeping our homeland safe from terrorist attacks, our government has a responsibility to protect Americans' privacy and to preserve civil liberties.  I look forward to engaging with the President, with Congressional leaders from both parties, and with members of the House and Senate Intelligence Committees to make sure our intelligence community has every tool it needs to keep our nation safe while continuing to ensure that the Constitutional rights of every American are respected."
