WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on President Trump's tweet threatening to abandon the people of Puerto Rico as they recover from a humanitarian crisis:

“As of this morning, 3.4 million American citizens are living on an island where only 17% of residents have power, in some areas only 30% have access to clean water, and many families are still unable to contact loved-ones to ensure they are safe.  Food, water, medical services, and fuel remain in short supply or unable to reach areas in need.  There are even reports from the Environmental Protection Agency that individuals desperate for water may be drinking from hazardous, contaminated waste sites.
“It is shameful that President Trump is threatening to abandon these Americans when they most need the federal government’s help.  He has a responsibility to our fellow citizens in Puerto Rico and on the U.S. Virgin Islands to ensure that every federal resource is made available to assist in recovery and rebuilding for as long as it takes. I will continue to urge the Administration to meet that responsibility.”
