WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after President Trump signed a new executive order banning Muslims and refugees from six countries from entering the United States:

“The executive order signed today doubles down on a radical policy that will weaken our national security and put all Americans in danger.  This ban is not only unconstitutional and immoral but also ill-conceived.  It will embolden our enemies, providing a powerful recruiting tool for ISIS to radicalize those already here legally and deter our Muslim allies from working with us to defeat terrorist groups.  Already, we have extremely secure vetting procedures in place, and picking and choosing which countries to include in this ban demonstrates that its real goal is not security but to fulfill a campaign promise to ban Muslims from our nation.

“Today’s signing should also not distract anyone from continuing to ask President Trump what activities he was engaged in that would have led the FISA court to approve a warrant for wiretapping, or from continuing to call for an investigation into the Administration’s questionable ties to the Russian government.”
