WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Trump Administration re-implemented sanctions against Iran:

“The United States must never allow Iran to acquire a nuclear weapons capability. The objectives laid out today by the Administration in this announcement of new sanctions against Iran are ones I have long supported: ending Iran’s threatening behavior against its neighbors, its launching of ballistic missiles in defiance of U.N. resolutions, and its support for terror around the world. However, it appears that there is no strategy to achieve these goals.  Rather than achieving its stated goal of eliminating Iran’s oil exports altogether, the Administration has issued ‘exemptions’ for major Iranian oil importers, allowing Iran to earn billions of dollars from oil sales.  These exemptions are premised on ‘significant reductions’ of Iranian oil imports by countries such as China and Turkey when there is minimal evidence of such reductions. This waters down the integrity of sanctions and communicates to the rest of the world that others do not have to abide by U.S. restrictions.

“Meanwhile, by tearing up the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the Trump Administration has isolated our country from our allies and undermined the multilateral effort to curb Iran’s dangerous behavior.  American allies in Europe are actively developing tools to circumvent our sanctions on Iran rather than joining us in fighting Iran’s malign activities.  Our country needs a well thought-out, strategic approach to Iran that prevents it from acquiring a nuclear weapons capability, presents its theocratic leaders with clear consequences for malfeasance, and ends its threats against Israel and our allies.  I fear today’s announcement undermines these objectives.”
