WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement in response to President Trump's accusations that President Obama wiretapped Trump Tower during the 2016 election:

"President Trump's outrageous allegations this weekend paint a picture of someone obsessed with conspiracy theories and detached from reality. Moreover, they reveal a basic misunderstanding of how our Constitution and justice system work. If President Trump had indeed been subject to a wiretap, as he alleges, it could only be because such a wiretap was approved by a court following evidence that he was engaged in illegal activity or working as a foreign agent. If the President's tweet was false and based on wild conjecture, he owes former President Obama and the American people an apology. If the President was indeed subject to a wiretap, the American people deserve to know why. The President should cooperate fully with any investigation of the type he has asked for and urge his Administration staff and his campaign staff and advisors to do the same."
