WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today regarding President Obama's speech on his plan to reduce the deficit:

"Today, President Obama outlined a fiscally-responsible plan that would reduce our deficit by $4 trillion over the next 12 years. It subjects our entire budget, including defense spending, to the scrutiny we need to find savings. And it calls for a fairer, simpler tax code that would mean lower rates for businesses and families.

“The president’s deficit plan stands in stark contrast to the Republican plan, which doesn’t balance the budget but hurts seniors and the middle class while giving big tax cuts to the wealthiest Americans. Republicans would end Medicare as we know it, forcing seniors to pay more and more for health care each year; they would also dismantle Medicaid, putting nursing home care for seniors and medical care for poor children and the disabled at risk.

“Republicans are drawing lines in the sand already to protect their top priority – not seniors, not kids, not investments in our economy, but trillions of dollars in tax cuts for the wealthy. President Obama’s plan would share sacrifice fairly, in keeping with our best American traditions.”
