WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in response to President Obama's speech on a better bargain for the middle class:
“In his speech today in Chattanooga, President Obama reiterated his commitment to creating jobs that pay well and provide the opportunities that sustain a strong and growing middle class. I am glad he made a point of noting how critical our manufacturing sector is when it comes to achieving this goal – and how for the first time since the 1990’s, America’s manufacturing sector is growing. We ought to build on the gains we have made by investing in laying the groundwork for growth over the long term without adding to the deficit. That’s why I support the President’s call to assist communities eager to revitalize their manufacturing infrastructure and attract investment, promote the U.S. as a destination for manufacturing, and support the training and placement of workers in good-paying manufacturing jobs.
“These goals are consistent with House Democrats’ Make It In America jobs plan, which focuses on four key areas: pursuing a national manufacturing strategy, promoting U.S. exports, encouraging the return of jobs and innovation, and securing a twenty-first century workforce. Our plan aims to create jobs and opportunities that sustain a thriving middle class, and several Make It In America bills already have bipartisan support. I hope the House will consider Make It In America legislation as we move forward so we can get more of our people back to work.”
