WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement after President Obama nominated Jeh Johnson to be the next Secretary of Homeland Security:

“By nominating Jeh Johnson to be our next Secretary of Homeland Security, President Obama has selected an outstanding public servant with significant experience in protecting our nation and supporting the work of law enforcement.  He is someone our nation’s first responders can rely on to make sure they have the resources and guidance they need to safeguard our communities and respond quickly and effectively in the event of an emergency.

“As General Counsel for the Department of Defense, Jeh was a crucial part of the President’s counterterrorism team and helped review every major military operation presented to the President for approval.  He played a central role in authoring the report that led to the repeal of the military’s discriminatory ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ policy, and he has been a key player in shaping a closer working relationship between the Pentagon and the Department of Homeland Security.  Throughout his seven years at the Department of Defense under two administrations, Jeh has been an incredibly effective manager and respected leader, known for his sound judgment and counsel.

“I hope the Senate will move forward with Jeh’s confirmation without delay.  I join in thanking Secretary Napolitano again for her service leading the Department of Homeland Security and wish her well in her new role leading the University of California system.”
