WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement following President Obama's speech this morning calling for Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform this year:

“I agree with the President that the House should pass comprehensive immigration reform legislation this year.  The Senate has acted, passing a bipartisan bill in June, and House Democrats have introduced H.R. 15, a similar bill that strengthens border security, creates a pathway to citizenship, and helps retain talented individuals from other countries who come here to study in our schools so they can contribute to growing our economy.  Comprehensive immigration reform will help lower our deficits and boost our economic competitiveness.

“Moreover, our nation has always served as a safe haven for those seeking a better life and a chance to work hard, take responsibility, and pursue the American Dream.  Congress has an opportunity to keep that dream alive for all who wish to join in building a strong future for our country, and I hope the House will take up consideration of comprehensive immigration reform legislation without delay.”
