WASHINGTON, DC – Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after President Obama spoke to the American Medical Association (AMA) about the urgent need to enact comprehensive health care reform:
“Today, the President addressed a key organization representing those on the front lines of the health care system about the need for comprehensive reform that contains costs, guarantees choice for consumers and expands access to quality care.
“Emphasizing the high cost of inaction, the President made a strong and straightforward argument for fixing what is broken and building on what works. That means guaranteeing Americans can keep their health plans and doctors if they desire, while providing choice for those who want or need it. It means enabling doctors to provide the most effective treatments for their patients. And it means ensuring the security of access to insurance coverage for all no matter what their financial situation – for the benefit of all Americans.
“As the President said, health care reform is not a luxury; it is a necessity. That is why Congress is working fervently to solve this problem before it gets worse. Progress is being made in both the House and Senate, with the goal of passing legislation by August and enacting comprehensive health reform this year.”
