WASHINGTON – House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (MD) released the following statement regarding President Bush’s comments today on Iraq:

“I am sure that most Americans are pleased with the President’s announcement of further aid for the Lebanese people, but his answers to reporters’ questions once again did not address the American people’s concerns with the lack of progress in Iraq.

“The President continues to offer personal resolve as a substitute for a critical assessment and a new strategy.  We have seen the dangerous results of a failure to critically examine policies before when the President insisted on the existence of weapons of mass destruction and that hundreds of thousands of troops would not be necessary to get the job done.

“Even prominent members of the President’s own Party have now joined Democrats in questioning his strategy.

“It is critical for our nation’s security that the President realize that it is time for a significant transition and a new direction in Iraq.”
