WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on the passing of former House Republican Leader Bob Michel:

"Today, I lost a dear friend, and America lost a great patriot. Bob Michel's service to the country was an example for us all. He was one of the most outstanding Members of Congress with whom I've served throughout my career.  I was saddened to learn his of passing this morning.

"A decorated infantryman wounded during the liberation of Europe, Bob never stopped serving his country, first as a Congressional aide and then in a nearly four-decade career representing the people of Illinois in the House.  As Republican Whip and Leader, he demonstrated a seriousness and decency as a legislator in the opposition by looking for ways to achieve compromise and consensus, an example sadly lost on many today.  Bob always believed that Members of Congress are elected to make policy, not play politics, and as much as he could be a tough opponent he was always ready to extend his hand in friendship and camaraderie to all his colleagues.

“All of us who served alongside him in the Congress will miss Bob Michel.  He was a paragon of how to put country before party.  We will remember him fondly, and I join in expressing my condolences to his entire family and all the people in Illinois and across our country on whom he made a profound, positive, lasting impact.”
